What is it?
Teen Takeover was originally created in 1985 under the direction of Sue Antoinette. Ascension had been hosting retreats for adults based on the CRHP model which was then adopted for teens. Like other retreat models, the goal of Teen Takeover was to provide a space and time away from everyday life for teens to feel comfortable sharing about themselves and building community. Over the years, many elements changed and were added based on the recommendations of the Team and the youth ministers. For the last several years, teen takeover has included small group discussions, talks about understanding your self and your relationships, and lots of icebreaker games. Teen Takeover takes place every 3rd Friday of March from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm on Ascension's Campus.
Teen Takeover Team is the group that helps plan and create the lock-in every year. There are five adult volunteers who mentor and develop leadership skills with the group. We begin by selecting 20 teens from past TT participants. The first half of our year is spent getting to know one another through icebreaker games, history sharings, and discussions. The rest of the year, we work in committees to prepare the many aspects of the 24 hours. From creating t-shirts to choosing music to choosing the food, teens create and lead Teen Takeover.
